This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
