The Video Platform Grants The Community Authority to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the service revealed that it now features over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread rollout. This advancement comes amid a surge in AI-generated material, driven by new content generation software.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature content made by AI. A significant portion of this output is deemed “AI slop”, a term for inferior, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” commented a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The platform shared that there are now 1.3bn videos on its app identified as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 m media items are added to the platform every day, making AI content a relatively small part of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they view by using the “manage topic” setting in the app and picking “AI-generated content”. Other topics that currently be adjusted under the filter encompass current affairs, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s rules mandate creators to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is without a tag can be removed under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will henceforth attach an artificially created watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is also launching a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to create educational content about ethical AI use. This program will assist charitable organizations focused on teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, amid controversy over plans to lay off a large number of safety staff in the United Kingdom. TikTok is planning to reduce a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in London, with labor groups and online safety experts voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that people-led review would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content before it has to be seen by people. The company reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

It is vital to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
