Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
